Washacre Primary School in Westhoughton and Bolton Council have invested over £40,000 in developing the new two-year-old nursery.
The school wanted to create a nursery that would not only complement the existing nursery for three- year-olds, but also enable children to have access to an extensive outdoor play area.
The fantastic outdoor play resources include a climbing tree, a rolling meadow, a giant covered sand pit so children can use it whatever the weather.
The new nursery also boasts its own outdoor kitchen where children can play and make everything from mud cakes in an outdoor play oven to mixing potions in the pots, pans and even the sink. This is in addition to the garden area, pirate ship and jungle gym that the school nursery already has.
Further developments are planned next month when an outdoor reading area, builder’s yard and a waterway are opened on the schools grounds.
The two-year-old nursery has 12 children attending at any one time. This is in addition to the 25 places they have for children in the three-year-old nursery.
By opening the new nursery Washacre Primary School is able to support families and their children to develop skills that will give them a head start when they start school.
“It also assists the children to develop friendships with other children and the staff to enable a smooth transition to the three-year-old nursery and ultimately the school.
Carl Messenger, Senior Leadership Team said: "The school is very proud to be able to open our doors to two-year-olds.
“The new nursery as been developed with experts in the field of child education and play and parents, to ensure that not only does it meet the needs of the children who attend, but it also enables them to develop new skills through play."
Anne Burns, School Governor, added: "The nursery that has been created by Washacre Primary School enables children in Westhoughton area to access outstanding facilities.
“By being on the same site as the Westhoughton Children's Centre and Washacre Primary School is an excellent resource for the local community.”
