WIGAN
Warriors
winger
Joe Burgess has been tipped
by England coach Steve
McNamara to bounce back
from his traumatic start to the
season.
The
20-year-old
Wigan-born
Burgess, who will join Sydney
Roosters at the end of the year, was
dropped by his home-town club for
the Super League game at Castleford
after producing a series of error-
strewn displays in the first month of
the campaign.
But McNamara, assistant coach
of the Roosters who took the player
Down Under for the Four Nations
Series last autumn, expects him to
quickly get back to the form that per-
suaded the 2013 NRL champions to
offer him a three-year deal.
“Joe is a young man, a tremendous
player, we all know that,” McNamara
said. Everybody goes through dips
in form at certain stages of their
careers. I certainly don’t think it’s the
second-year syndrome with Joe.
“He’s a confident person. He will
know what he needs to do to put it
right and I’m sure he’s getting some
great help from everybody at Wigan.
“Hopefully he will get back to the
form he showed at the end of last
season.”
SEVEN Harriers ruled at
this year’s running of the
Roddlesworth Roller coming
away with four individual and
one team prizes.
As the name suggests, this is a
tough undulating trail race, with
600 feet of climb over 5.5 miles. Flat
enough to be fast. Rolling enough for
your quads to really hurt the next
day.
Impressively doubling up after
placing 6th at the Flower Scar
English Champs Fell Race, Lindsey
Brindle had the run of the day to take
the ladies race by an impressive mar-
gin. Erica Booth was another with
a weekend double that would surely
have helped win the ladies the team
prize, but for another runner, in 9th.
Also doubling up, and taking his
second victory of the weekend was
Michael Cayton, who is starting to
see all his effort since coming back to
running begin to pay off.
Completing a winning team for the
Men was Paul Boardman in 23rd.
Rudolph Maciejkowicz was next,
and picking up the prize for the V60
category. The last of the magnificent
seven was every improving newmem-
ber David Lee, placing 83rd of 177.

BOLTON Wanderers have captured Crystal Palace
centre-back Paddy McCarthy on loan until the end
of theseason, whowas thesubject of aprankcall by
aman impersonatingNeil Lennon.
West Brom manager Tony Pulis seemingly fell
victim to a call from prankster Blain Morrison pre-
tending tobe theBoltonboss and requested taking
Baggies defender GarethMcAuley on loan.
Pulis refused to consider letting McAuley
leave during the call last month but instead sug-
gested Bolton pursue McCarthy from his former
side Crystal Palace and remarkably Lennon has
appeared to seize upon the opportunity and has
signed the Irishman.
The 31-year-old defender has been at Selhurst
Park since 2008, but has foundhis first teamoppor-
tunities limited since Palace’s promotion to the
Premier League.
McCarthy has twice spent loan spells at
Sheffield United this season, but joins Lennon’s
Championship side and goes into the squad to
face Blackburn Rovers. He will join up with fellow
Eagles loanee Barry Bannan at Wanderers, with
Lennon’s outfit currently 17th position in a tight
Championship table.
Wanderers have also completed the loan signing
of Giles Coke from Sheffield Wednesday. The mid-
fielder joins from the Owls until the end of the cur-
rent campaign. Startinghisprofessional careerwith
Mansfield Town in 2005, Coke enjoyed spells with
NorthamptonTown andMotherwell before joining
SheffieldWednesday in July 2010.
Following loan stints with Bury and Swindon
Town, the 28-year-old established himself as a reg-
ular at Hillsborough during the second half of the
2012/13 campaign.

far this year, scoring one goal – a memorable effort
from distance against Brighton & Hove Albion on
the openingday of the season.
WIGAN Warriors did not break
many pots in beating Hull FC
13-12 but simply bagging two
big points was of paramount
importance following two away
defeats.
Tensionwas certainly in plentiful sup-
plyat theDWStadiumandtherewasnot
much to choose between two sides who
have started the season poorly.
Josh Charnley said ahead of the
game the players were to blame for
Wigan’s poor start not coach Wane.
Charnley was a first half casualty
with a knee injury and Wigan led
12-0 at the break.
Joel Tomkins whose form has
been good gave them an early lead
with a well worked try but Wigan
failed to build on this. The home
side looked understandably hesitant.
Nevertheless, Wigan doubled their
lead with a second try from Dan
Sarginson but yet again, they lacked
the know-how to close the game out.
It came as so surprise when Hull
hit back at the start of the second half
with a softy try from Fetuli Talanoa.
Wigan continued to press but their
next points came from a Matty Smith
drop goal making it 13-6 deep into
the final quarter.
Hull were dogged but did not looked
any better than they had done when
losing at Salford recently on Rangi
Chase’s night of magic.
Liam Farrell toiled relentlessly for the
Warriors but a sparkwas clearlymissing
from their normally reliable artillery.
The tension increased with a second Hull
tryfromCallumLancastergoaledbyMarc
SneydbutWiganheldout.
One point separated the sides with
just six minutes left.
Hull finished the game on attack
but it came to nothing. Come the end,
Smith’s drop goal proved invaluable but
Wigan clearly have plenty to work on.
BOLTONWanderers boss Neil Lennon has admitted
his relief after seeing his side claim an “ugly” win
overMillwall.
The Trotters picked up just their second victory
in seven Championship games on Saturday as they
sawoff the Lions 2-0 at the Reebok Stadium.
Despite conceding that his team’s performance
was not an entertaining one, Lennon is happy that
they were able to secure three vital points in their
battle for survival.
“It’s a very welcome victory,” he told the club’s
official website. “We probably haven’t played as
well as we have in recent games, but we got the job
done in the end.
“Towinandkeepacleansheetisfantastic,andit’s
very important for where we are right now. It was a
bit of anuglywin, if youwant to call it that.”
The result has liftedBoltonup to16thplace in the
Championship table, 10 points clear of the relega-
tion zone.
