WESTHOUGHTON SET SIGHTS
ON MORE SILVERWARE IN 2015
Westhoughton team line-ups: (top) First XI, (centre) Second team, (bottom)
the Third XI
Pro Qaiser Abbas will be back at Westhoughton for
the new season
by RobHoughton
WESTHOUGHTON Cricket Club is looking
forward to the 2015 Bolton League season
and is on the hunt for silverware.
2014 was another successful year for the club,
1st X1 finished third with the 2nd team once again
winning the league, breaking the league record for
consecutive league titles and added the Birtwistle
Cup to the trophy cabinet. Our 3rd team ended
up league winners and cup runners-up and once
again our juniors brought success and trophies in a
great season in their respective age groups.
At 1st X1 level, 2015 has the prospect of being an
exciting year. Bolton League pro of the year 2013 and
2014, Qaiser Abbas, is once again back as the club
professional in his third season; the return of Rob
Brown from a year away at University boosts the
squad and themarquee signing of former Lancashire
player Oliver Newby adds real quality to the side. No
doubt his bowlingwill add extra fire to the attack and
by the signs in the nets his batting will be influential
in many a game, plus his experience and coaching
with the lads will be priceless.
Another two faceswho are set for aWesthoughton
return give great strength and depth to an already
good side. The team, though, will be missing a
couple of faces from last season; club stalwarts
Ian Pilkington and Steve Parker have hung up
their boots although I’m sure they will be ready to
answer the call if needed. Also Atiq Uz-Zaman has
decided to leave the club to continue his career in
the Cheshire League. With the additions the club
has made I fully expect us to be challenging for sil-
verware on all fronts and be right in the mix for the
league title come early September.
The 2nd X1 will once again be a strong side. They
are fixed on retaining the league and cup double
and under Arun Pindoria’s captaincy they will once
again be a tough side to beat. Our 3rd XI gained
promotion last season, with Lee Ashcroft looking
forward to unleashing his young talented side on
some new teams and grounds.
Once again the club are looking to field sides in
all the junior age groups and add an u19s side to the
ECB national t20 competition. With the hard work of
the coaches, volunteers, players and hopefully some
goodweather! I’msure 2015will once again be a pros-
perous year for Westhoughton Cricket Club.
